Birchwood Community Church

It’s now 5 months since we officially launched the Encounter Centre! So I thought, for my first blog/newsletter, and not before time(!), I’d provide a snapshot of some of the blessings we are enjoying here, as well as some of the challenges, for your prayers. What is absolutely clear is that without prayer none of this would have happened! So please keep praying!

The vision for the Encounter Centre is that it will act as a bridge between church and community. Our aim, our prayer, is that people will come here and encounter the love of Jesus! The centre is generally open to the public from 9am – 4pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

People come…

…’to chat, to be quiet; to help, to be helped; to eat, to drink (the kettle is always on!); to share, to listen; to laugh, to cry; to pray, to be prayed with; to teach, to be taught; to do, or simply to be’.

Currently, an average of 80 people, the majority being unchurched, are attending the regular weekly missional activities at the centre! Praise God! These scheduled events include:

  • Young at Heart” coffee mornings. Over 50s tea, coffee, chat (Mondays).

  • HeArt” - community art and chat. Optional Breakfast & Bible discussion (Tuesdays).

  • Free Legal Advice (Fiona Bruce & Co) and PCSO surgery (Thursdays, am).

  • Foodbank. Emergency food parcels for local people in crisis. We also use this time to support refugees, eg by knitting blankets (Thursdays, pm).

  • Take a Break”. People enjoy a cuppa and a chat – and often ask for prayer! (Fridays).

  • Youth Provision, Friday nights, led by Sam (Warrington Youth For Christ)

Increasingly, we are finding that people often just drop in to be quiet, to pray or to talk.

In addition, we have had some special one-off events. Our Men’s Curry Night saw 26 guys come and enjoy great food and company and a personal testimony in which the Gospel was shared in a wonderfully relevant way. We also had a fellowship meal enjoyed by a similar number of people who are new to the church.

Forthcoming Special Events @ Encounter Centre. Please pray for:

  • Birchwood Strategy Consultation, led by a local councillor (Thursday 30th March)

  • Prayer Day (Saturday 1st April). Focusing on our Easter outreach.

  • Volunteering by the staff at Birchwood Mall. They want to use their volunteer hours to bless us by working on the centre and its gardens! How cool is that!?

  • Easter Events: Thursday 13th April, 6:30pm – “Last Supper” celebration;

Good Friday service, 11am, followed by walk of witness in Birchwood Mall

Saturday 15 April – Film Night: “RISEN”

  • Big Brekkie: Saturday 20 May - part of Christian Aid Week

But it’s not all about the Encounter Centre! We want to equip the saints at Birchwood Community Church to play their part in fulfilling the Great Commission! Other missional activity planned at BCC includes:

  • Easter Sunday – Invitational Family Service at Birchwood College

  • Big Church Day Out: Friday June 2 - Saturday 3rd @ Capesthorne Hall, Cheshire

  • Birchwood Carnival: Sunday 4 June – instead of our regular morning service we want to bless Birchwood by volunteering and having a presence (prayer and activities) at the Carnival!

Please pray for these events and for other future ideas. We need to discern the difference between ‘Good ideas’ and ‘God ideas’, so that we will know God’s grace a favour as we share God’s love relevantly to those who are seeking Him!
